Hajj and Umrah companion app addressing a problem technology is genuinely well suited to: pilgrims navigating an unfamiliar country, in an unfamiliar language, during a time-bound religious obligation with little margin for confusion.
Voice-to-voice translation handles live conversation across a language barrier. Image-to-text with translation reads signs and documents through the camera and translates them in place, which covers the far more common situation of needing to understand something written rather than to speak to someone. Step-by-step guidance provides the sequence, checklists, and supplications for each stage.
Offline mode is the decision that matters most. Connectivity during pilgrimage is unreliable at exactly the moments of highest crowd density, and a translation app that requires a network is useless precisely when it is needed. Core content works without a connection, which pushes real constraints back into the design: what must be bundled, what can be fetched opportunistically, and how the interface behaves when it cannot reach anything.
Translation management lets users save and edit favourites, since pilgrims repeat the same handful of phrases constantly and re-translating them is wasted effort. Voice commands support hands-free use, which matters when you are carrying belongings in a crowd.
Built with React Native and Expo as a university final year project. The brief was open, and choosing a problem with real users and hard constraints produced a more demanding build than a conventional CRUD application would have.
