Remote Work: How I Stay Focused and Connected

Rituals, tools, and boundaries that help when your office is your laptop and your team is async.
Working remotely can be great for focus, or a blur of context switches. Here’s what works for me.
Block Deep-Work Time
Calendar blocks for “no meetings” and “coding” so others see when you’re in flow. Turn off Slack/email notifications during those blocks. Batch replies instead of reacting to every ping.
Over-Communicate Status
Short updates in a shared channel or standup doc: “Done X, next Y, blocked on Z.” People don’t see you at a desk; a few sentences keep everyone aligned and reduce “where are we?” messages.
Separate “Work” and “Not Work”
If you can, use a different room or desk for work. If not, a clear shutdown ritual (close laptop, clear the table) helps the brain switch off. Avoid “just one more fix” at 10 p.m.
Invest in Video and Audio
Good mic and camera make calls less exhausting and build rapport. Async video for demos or explanations can replace some meetings and let people watch when they’re free.
Remote work is a skill. Small habits around focus and communication make a big difference.
